Come and discover Thouars: the wonder of the Anjou region!
Located around 1 kilometre from the campsite, set off lightly (and with good shoes, because the climb is a big one!) and visit the historic heart of Thouars, a town with medieval charm that will transport you back in time. With its picturesque narrow streets, half-timbered houses that add to the charm and medieval atmosphere, and imposing ramparts, this little town of character has something to surprise you at every turn. Take a diversion to the Château des Ducs de La Trémoille, an architectural gem overlooking the Thouet valley, built between the 12th and 17th centuries. It’s almost like being in a fairytale, except that this is real life! As you stroll along, you’ll probably come across the Prince of Wales Tower, which dates back to the 13th century and was once used to defend the site. Bonus: the panoramic view over the whole valley from the top! Further on, the Romanesque church of St-Médard is home to some sublime frescoes. For a romantic break in the countryside, take the Pont des Chouans, which straddles the Thouet and offers a number of hiking trails. Fancy a gourmet break? Stop off at one of the many restaurants in the area to discover the local gastronomy. From goat’s cheeses to Anjou wines, and specialities such as Easter pâté (I promise, it’s delicious even outside the festive season), your taste buds will be delighted!
A bucolic getaway in the heart of nature
Nature lovers won’t be disappointed either! Around Thouars, the landscapes of Anjou and Poitou stretch as far as the eye can see. The region is easily accessible on foot or by bike: you can follow the paths along the banks of the Thouet, a peaceful river that invites you to relax. Between lush green meadows, wine-growing landscapes and authentic, picturesque villages, enjoy a family outing in the fresh air! Around thirty kilometres from Thouars, take a break in the heart of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park, a protected corner of paradise where wild nature and numerous animal species live side by side. For fans of slow tourism, it’s the perfect opportunity to take in the sights (and fill up your film!).
With the whole family: get your thrills!
Just a twenty-minute drive away, young and old alike will love a day out at Parc de la Vallée, in Val-en-Vignes. Set in a friendly natural environment, your day will be filled with swimming, all kinds of attractions, outdoor activities and entertainment. Hungry for something to eat? No problem! There are picnic areas where you can recharge your batteries. Just make sure you’re ready for the day (and with good shoes!).
An immersive experience alongside incredible species : welcome to the Bioparc!
Looking for a family experience? Then head to the Doué-la-Fontaine Biopark, half an hour’s drive away! The only one of its kind in Europe, this biopark, most of which is set in rock, is emblematic of the region, with no fewer than 130 species to discover! Some are more discreet than others, but there’s no difference to the site, which is committed to protecting species and raising awareness among the local population. Need a gourmet break? Take a seat at the restaurant, whose sublime terrace overlooks the zebra and giraffe enclosure (you’re bound to fall in love, especially with the giraffes that chase each other!). With red pandas, meerkats, lemurs and birds from all over the world, you’ll be amazed by the spectacle. Bonus: if the birds don’t impress you, take a closer look at them in total freedom in the large South American aviary. A real ball!
Getaway to Saumur: between the Loire and heritage
Saumur (30 kms away from the campsite) is the little pearl of the Loire Valley, with its fairytale château, elegant horses and wine cellars that will have you dreaming for a day! Nestling between the immense Loire River, with the Cessart bridge linking the two banks, and the vineyards, this charming town has everything to please lovers of heritage, nature… and a good glass of wine (always in moderation). One of the must-sees is the Château de Saumur. Overlooking the Loire, this architectural gem combines medieval and Renaissance features. Formerly the residence of the Dukes of Anjou, it now houses some very fine collections for you to discover.
If you’re a wine-lover, you’ll want to stop off at one of the many wine cellars in the Saumur region, such as the famous Ackerman cellar, where the typical troglodyte décor is the real charm. Cheers!
If you’re in the heart of the equestrian world, get your tickets for a show at the Cadre Noir. This equestrian ballet combines elegance, mastery and… a few unusual tricks (the horses don’t always jump off the tables ready for the banquet). A real show to enjoy with the whole family!
Montreuil-Bellay Castle
The Château de Montreuil-Bellay (18 kms away from the campsite) is a bit like the ‘mille-feuille’ of the Loire Valley Châteaux: built and modified through the ages, it proudly displays its blend of styles, from the medieval period to the Renaissance. With its 13 towers, ramparts and drawbridge, it is a true architectural marvel. Wander through its elegant gardens, finely decorated rooms and even its wine cellars, because here, wine-tasting is part of the journey. A château to see and savour!
Château de Brézé: a historic break
More castles, but what would the region be without its castles… Château de Brézé (25 kms away from the campsite) is a castle with a well-kept secret… underground! Beneath its beautiful Renaissance exterior, this château hides an incredible network of underground passages (the largest in Europe), housing troglodytic rooms, dizzying dry moats and even a hidden bakery (because yes, even the castellans had their little nocturnal hungers). Somewhere between a fairytale castle and an underground fortress, Brézé has something to surprise even the most seasoned visitors! A great idea for a fun family outing.
Fontevraud Abbey: a real historical wonder!
A little further on, another of the region’s must-sees! Once one of the largest monastic cities in Europe, it was home not only to monks and nuns, but also to a number of medieval celebrities – including Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart, no less! This royal abbey has majestic buildings and a somewhat mystical atmosphere. Over the centuries, it has even taken a diversion into prison before becoming a major cultural centre. Take a stroll through its cloisters today and admire its impressive church and outstanding architecture.

Put your bags down at Le Petit Bocage campsite, in Les Essart-en-Bocage, just an hour and a half’s drive away. A real little corner of nature on a human scale, where comfort is close at hand, this site is also the gateway to discover the Bocage Vendéen (and its gourmet brioches) and marvel at the Parc du Puy du Fou. With family or friends, relaxation and thrills will be the watchwords of your holiday!
